01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Step onto the 6th floor of a building in Hanakawado, and the calm surface of the Sumida River unfolds alongside Tokyo Skytree just outside the window. What draws many visitors to Ukonya is the chance to whisk their own bowl of matcha using a bamboo chasen. Staff guide you through the motions, so even first-timers can quickly work the whisk back and forth to create a fine, creamy froth and a fragrant bowl of tea.

To accompany the tea, the sweet selections include the Raijin Set, which pairs matcha with anmitsu, and the Fujin Set, featuring shiratama rice dumplings and red bean paste alongside nata de coco. The gentle bitterness of the freshly whisked matcha balances the mild sweetness of the red bean paste, making for a refreshing pause during an Asakusa stroll. Raijin and Fujin can also be ordered on their own, allowing you to combine them with any drink of your choice.

Beyond sweets, curry is available for those looking for a satisfying midday meal. The cheese curry combines melted cheese with a roux simmered with ground meat, chickpeas, and chopped mushrooms, delivering varied textures, while a heartier version comes topped with sausage. Tangy pours like pomegranate vinegar soda or lemon soda cut through the rich flavors nicely.

The beverage lineup extends to coffee and tea, alongside alcoholic options such as sparkling wine or sake poured until overflowing into a cedar masu box, as well as bottled beer. Inside, table seating is joined by a raised tatami area, creating an unhurried perch from which to admire the view. Ukonya operates during the day until late afternoon and accepts cash only, so it is best to check the timing before working it into your walk through Asakusa.
